Miesas, Matisyohu

(1885-1945)

   Galician Yiddish semiologist. He was born in Pshemeshl, Galicia. At a language conference held at Czernowitz in 1908 he gave a paper on the scientific analysis of Yiddish; this was the first such study to be written in the language itself. His publications include Enstehungsursache der judischen Dialekte, Die jiddische Sprache and Die Gesetze der Schriftgeschichte.
